Sidequest

“Find Liz,” their quest reads. Theo and Eliza, two butch besties, set off—first through a party, then onto the streets of Brooklyn—motivated by the sense that nothing is impossible and compelled forward by a pretty girl. Almost immediately, they encounter a runaway orange, which they take as a sign. Following it through the city, they call out for Liz, but when the orange stops, they realize they are lost. With no clear direction, they begin following other signs: two lesbians on a tandem bike, dancers who seem sent from the heavens, a bandleader in a felted hat orchestrating unseen rhythms. Each encounter is at once completely random and totally fated, leading them deeper into Brooklyn’s vibrant, chaotic life. Their journey becomes a kaleidoscopic quest, moving through the city’s streets, the queer community that guides them—should they open their eyes to it—and the infinite magic hidden in butch friendship—all in pursuit of acceptance, clarity, and the elusive Liz.
