Every year, the Charlotte Film Festival brings bold voices to the screen—but some voices echo off-screen too. In this spotlight, we’re getting to know Annapurna Sriram, whose work caught our eye and stuck with us.
What led you to creating Fucktoys?
I was a struggling actor fed up with the material I was getting and wanted to create something that harkened to the films I grew up with, something irreverent, smutty, and fun!
Tell us what you hope the audience gets from Fucktoys?
I hope that they get a fun adventure but also an understanding of the trials we all face in late capitalism and especially a humanization of women, sex workers, and trans people
Why is a story like this important to tell?
This film includes radical representation for people of color, queer, and trans folks. This film humanizes all of the characters and explore themes of class that need to be told.
What do you want your legacy to be as a filmmaker?
That I cared about the marginalized and freaks.
